At 12:45 p.m., the national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office was contacted and announced that the attacker is a young Chechen of 20 years old. One of his PE teachers had had him in class 3 years previously. “He was a reserved, calm student. We never suspect that these students might act out one day. With him, I had normal conversations, about sports. He was truly an average student.. »

At 2:15 p.m., the identity of the victim was revealed for the first time; it was Dominique Bernard, a French teacher killed while trying to intervene to protect the students. At the same time, it was announced that the terrorist had been arrested.

In Arras, there is consternation. “I have 32 years in the police and I am very shocked,” confided Hamzy Slimane, Alliance departmental delegate. “When I arrived on scene, unfortunately the victim was lying on the ground. The colleagues arrived quickly, but unfortunately we could not save her. »

At the end of the day, after the total evacuation of the Gambetta-Carnot high school, a few students spoke out. “When we found out what had happened, the teachers confined us for at least two hours. Everyone was very, very stressed, everyone was crying. When we were able to go out, we were surrounded by the police so I felt safe,” confided one of them.

This tragic day of October 13, 2023 ended with Emmanuel Macron speaking on television, giving way to several days of mourning in Arras. This Sunday, October 13, 2024, one year to the day after the terrorist attack, a major ceremony will take place on the Place des Héros from 11 a.m. to pay tribute to Dominique Bernard.

From 11 a.m., the sirens of the City of Arras will sound. This will be followed by songs, music, dance, poetry readings, and visual arts. Frédéric Leturque, mayor of Arras, will give a speech. The people of Arrage will be invited to place a rose at the foot of the plaque dedicated to the victims of terrorism.
