Accused of sexual violence, MP Hugo Prevost announces his resignation

The deputy for Isère Hugo Prevost, implicated and excluded by his party La insoumise for suspicions of “serious acts of a sexual nature”, announced on Wednesday October 9 that he was resigning from his mandate.

“I appreciate the seriousness of the accusations made against me. I have defended myself against them. I will not respond to them publicly (…) Taking note of the decision of the La France insoumise Group – New Popular Front, I am announcing as soon as today the resignation of my mandate”, he wrote in a press release published on X.

The LFI group in the Assembly explained late Tuesday that it had been contacted at the end of September by the Vigilance Committee against Sexist and Sexual Violence (CVSS) of LFI “concerning serious acts of a sexual nature which could be criminal offenses, prior” to the election of the deputy and announced that he had “pronounced (his) exclusion”. In the process, the 25-year-old former student unionist was also excluded from LFI, the radical left group told AFP.

“Aghast and sickened by these revelations”

“At the time of presenting my candidacy for the New Popular Front in the 1st constituency of Isère, and during the election of the 1st and 2nd round, I was not aware of the existence of the accusations which are today brought to my attention”, further indicates Hugo Prevost in his press release.

The LFI group’s announcement on Wednesday sparked numerous reactions and calls for resignation in Isère, where Hugo Prevost won in July against former Macronist minister Olivier Véran.

The deputy’s deputy, Salomé Robin, said in a statement that she was “appalled and sickened by these revelations”, expressing her “support for the victims”. “Having absolutely nothing to do with Hugo Prevost, I inform you that I am leaving my role as substitute deputy, pending a resignation from him,” she adds. Olivier Véran, for his part, called for an “investigation”.
