This Tuesday, October 1, 2024, the CGT, Solidaires and FSUas well as youth organizations, are calling for strikes and demonstrations to demand the repeal of the pension reform and an increase in wages. They also denounce the appointment of a right-wing and Macronist government after the legislative elections.
Here’s what to expect in Lyon and the region this Tuesday.
Disruptions in schools
“To finally obtain positions and the end of the clash of knowledge. Let us not give up, our demands are just and we are legitimate in expressing them,” explains the CGT.
Nursery and primary schools, middle and high schools will be affected by absences, or even closures. In Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, certain establishments will be closed. The list is not yet known.
Rhône and Lyon firefighters on strike
The discontent also concerns the firefighters of the SDMIS (Firefighters of the metropolitan area of Lyon and the Rhône). Firefighters will be on “indefinite” strike from October 1, annoyed by the low amounts of “JO bonuses” and the elimination of a housing allowance.
Rémy Chabbouh, national secretary of the SUD SDIS union, warns that the strike will last until the Festival of Lights, an event where firefighters are heavily mobilized.
Risks of disruption at SNCF
“Due to a national inter-professional social movement on Tuesday October 1, 2024, traffic is likely to be adapted on some of your TER lines in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes,” warns the regional SNCF. Disturbances will be published line by line from 5 p.m.
TGV lines to and from Lyon will not be affected by the strike movement, according to SNCF. On the TCL side, nothing yet suggests that they could be impacted.
A demonstration Tuesday morning
In addition to public services, a demonstration is also organized in the streets of Lyon on Tuesday morning. The CGT 69, the FSU-SNUipp 69 and Solidaires Rhône are organizing a union procession.
The gathering must begin at 11:30 a.m. in front of the Manufacture des Tabacs (8th arrondissement). Participants will head towards Place Bellecour (2nd).
They will pass through Garibaldi, Saxe-Gambetta, then la Guillotière.
