Bournemouth

Bournemouth have made significant progress under the leadership of Andoni Iraola. However, considering how last season ended, the Cherries have managed just one win in their last eight Premier League matches, putting added pressure on the team. In October, Bournemouth face three consecutive England Champions League opponents (Arsenal, Aston Villa, Manchester City), making the next two matches against newly promoted sides in the Premier League crucial. Iraola’s team needs maximum results; otherwise, they risk entering the relegation zone in November.

The stats reveal that the Cherries have performed quite well, deserving much more than the five points they currently hold after the first five rounds. In terms of xG (expected goals), Bournemouth ranks fourth, behind Liverpool, Manchester City and Aston Villa. However, the team’s efficiency in finishing attacks was lacking. The Cherries missed out on five goals, the equivalent of three dropped points, which can be attributed to the abrupt departure of Dominic Solanke. Club record signing Evanilson is yet to justify his high price tag, having failed to score in five appearances.

Southampton

The Saints came close to securing their first win of the season in the previous round. Against another newly promoted side, Ipswich Town, Russell Martin’s side took the lead inside five minutes. The goal was orchestrated by two different generations of Southampton alumni: Adam Lallana, 36, who returned to the club this summer, provided the assist, while Tyler Dibling, 18, scored his first Premier League goal. The St. Albans native promises to be a true revelation this season, showing an impressive level of composure and confidence for his age, accompanied by creativity and determination. At just 18 years and 217 days old, he became Southampton’s fourth youngest goalscorer in the Premier League after Michael Obafemi, Dexter Blackstock and Sam Gallagher.

Unfortunately for Dibling, his first goal was not decisive. In the final seconds of added time, the Saints conceded to Sam Morsy and ultimately settled for a 1-1 draw.

Bournemouth vs Southampton: Author’s Prediction

Previous meetings between the Premier League teams were not known for high scores. In the 2022-2023 season, Bournemouth and Southampton exchanged 1-0 away victories, and the home team in this match has not scored in four consecutive matches in all tournaments. I expect this trend to end. Both teams are prone to attack and lack reliable defenses. My prediction: both teams score + higher total (2.5).
