Facing Casper Ruud in the second round of the US Open, Gaël Monfils took a set from the Norwegian but ended up losing. There are therefore no more French players at the bottom of the draw.
Wednesday was a disastrous day for the French players at the US Open. After Arthur Cazaux, Alexandre Müller, Arthur Rinderknech and Ugo Humbert, Gaël Monfils faced Casper Ruud, and the world number 45 was logically eliminated by the number 8. A few days before celebrating his 38th birthday, “la Monfe” was unable to compete with the former finalist of the tournament, even if he took a set from him. It was finally a 6-4, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 defeat for the last Frenchman in the running at the bottom of the table, at the end of a match lasting 2 hours 52 minutes, interrupted for two hours due to the storm. Gaël Monfils was very inconsistent during this match, and made points and mistakes, just like his statistics: 14 aces, 13 double faults, 52 winners and 57 unforced errors. There was only one break point in the first set, in favor of Casper Ruud at 2-2. The Norwegian converted it and pocketed the set. Continuing his momentum, the 25-year-old player broke early in the second set, then again at 4-2, to lead two sets to zero.

Gaël Monfils then had to defend two break points at the start of the third set and we thought the match was going to end very quickly, but he saved them, and it was finally he who took his opponent’s serve, on his very first opportunity of the match, to lead 2-0. The Frenchman managed to maintain his lead until 5-2, where he broke again, on a shutout, to return to a two-set lead. Hope was then high, especially since he led 3-1 in the fourth set. But Ruud broke back with a shutout (3-3), and finally won in the tie-break, winning 7-3 after starting with a 4-0. Gaël Monfils’ sixteenth US Open therefore ends there. We should see him again during the Asian tour in mid-September. As for Ruud, he will face Juncheng Shang, world number 72, on Friday.
