Alien: Romulus has managed to establish itself as the best sequel to the franchise in decades. The film managed to stay true to what made the first two films exceptional while offering its own unique vision. Several sequels Alien attempted to do the same, but failed to progress beyond the preliminary development stage for various reasons.
Potential sequels left aside
A script by William Gibson for Alien III could have taken the franchise in a completely different direction. Gibson's version would have delivered an action-oriented sci-fi blockbuster, complete with genetically engineered xenomorphs. Unfortunately this script was never used and Alien 3 was released in 1992.
In 2015, South African director Neil Blomkamp was announced to be developing a new sequel to the franchise Alien. Despite the failure of his following films, Elysium et ChappieBlomkamp's announcement raised a lot of hope. However, with the development ofAlien: CovenantBlomkamp's project was shelved.
