Australian Open > Mikael Tillström, coach of Gaël Monfils: “What he is still capable of doing physically is impressive, but what he is doing mentally is just as impressive”

Just three days after becoming the oldest winner of an ATP tournament in Auckland, Gaël Monfils found the strength to win a five-set battle in the first round of the Australian Open against his young, talented and powerful compatriot, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

“Gaël loves this game, the energy of the crowd, the competition. What he can still do physically is impressive, but what he does mentally is just as impressive. Against Giovanni, two sets all, he can ruminate and tell himself that two hours earlier, he could have won in three. But he stays in it, he continues”underlined the 38-year-old player's coach, Mikael Tillström, in comments given to The Team.
