Destanee Aiava, 195th in the world this week, managed to get out of qualifying for the Australian Open and will face world 94th Greet Minnen in the first round.
Beyond this great performance, the 24-year-old Australian was especially noted for having worn during qualifying outfits worn by stars of the WTA circuit several years ago.
In the 1st round, Aiava played with an outfit that Maria Sharapova had worn at the 2012 US Open, beaten at the time in the semi-final of the tournament by Victoria Azarenka.
Then in the 2nd round, it was an outfit dating from the 2010 US Open, worn by Ana Ivanovic, that Destanee Aiava used.
Questioned by journalist Ben Rothenberg about these “vintage” outfits, the player, currently without a sponsor, explained that she bought them on a famous online sales platform:
-“I found them on eBay for double the sale price. But yes, I like looking on Depop, Facebook Marketplace, eBay, to find vintage outfits that I loved when I was little. I think I have six in my collection. »
And before her first round, Aiava revealed at a press conference that she had already found her new outfit:
“I found one yesterday on Facebook. For just $35, which is a deal. Obviously, I hope to have a sponsor. But right now, I love choosing what I’m going to wear and buying what I want. »
