“Play best of three sets until the quarter-finals in a Grand Slam”

Absent from the ATP circuit for a year and a half, Nick Kyrgios confirmed his return to the highest level in January.

In the meantime, the whimsical Australian player, aged 29, spoke of his desire to see some changes in tournaments.

The former 13th player in the world believes that Grand Slam tournaments should implement a new rule to give lower ranked players more chances to go further.

“I think it would be better to play Grand Slam matches as best of three sets until the quarter-finals.

Then, best of five. This is what I would like to change immediately,” Kyrgios explains.

“With this format, you will see more players capable of reaching the quarters. The first week would also be more exciting.

How many times have we seen the best players in the draw lose the first set and end up winning the match one way or another? », he asked for the Australian Open website.

The Australian took a concrete example to illustrate his words: “When Li Tu won a set against Alcaraz at the US Open, you might say to yourself that there is a round everywhere and that we are starting with a decisive set.

This could have completely changed Li's career. He beat Alcaraz on Court Arthur Ashe and he became a name. That would be a nice change. »

That's not all, since Nick Kyrgios also announced he wanted more mixed doubles, equipping players with a microphone to improve the Fan Experience or even improving the quality of comments on television channels.
