ATP > Zapata Miralles (ex-37th) victim of a major depression: “I remember saying to my wife: ‘My life is shit, I don’t want to play the next tournament'”

Back on the Challenger courts a few days ago after deciding to take a two-month break from the circuit, the Spanish player, Bernabe Zapata Miralles, spoke to our colleagues at break point about his depression.

Unable to have fun on or off the court, the former 37e world player and current 292e returned to this rather dark period.

“I don’t like to label things, I don’t want to come here and cry, but let’s say I entered a state of sadness that was affecting my daily life, it was hard to appreciate the good things I have in the life. This hole, where we cannot find answers, is getting deeper and deeper and it is not easy to get out of it. I always made it clear that tennis was my job, that outside of tennis I had a very pleasant life, that I was a person who enjoyed many things outside of work. The problem was that this time I was so lost in my work that it started to affect me in other areas of my life, making the problem even bigger than it was. actually was. I had a bad year in my sporting career, a shitty year, so to speak. I remember leaving the Barcelona Challenger final and saying to my wife in the evening: ‘My life is shit, I don’t want to play the next tournament’. This feeling lasted several months, until the end of July when I decided to stop until my son was born. »
