ATP Shanghai: Daniil Medvedev wins against Thiago Seyboth Wild (7-5, 7-5) in the 2nd round

He doesn’t lose his rhythm. After a good tournament in Beijing where he was only stopped by Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-final, Daniil Medvedev is back on track in Shanghai. The Russian, winner of the tournament in 2019, did not have fun for his debut in the 2nd round against Thiago Seyboth Wild, 88th in the world. But he took his revenge in two sets (7-5, 7-5) and 1h57 of play on the Brazilian who had eliminated him in the first round of Roland-Garros 2023 to everyone’s surprise during their first confrontation. For a place in the round of 16, the Russian, seeded 5 in the Chinese Masters 1000, will challenge the Italian Matteo Arnaldi.

Everything was not easy for Medvedev. And truth be told, he was even pretty heckled during these two sets which followed a similar scenario. Taken by the throat by an ultra-offensive Seyboth Wild and at the net at the slightest opportunity – 16 points won by the Brazilian on 24 climbs – the world number 5 was broken first in each round, however managing to quickly recover its delay (from 1-3 to 3-3 in the first and from 0-2 to 2-2 in the second).

As if he managed to adjust himself little by little in passing or quite simply from the baseline in order to prevent his opponent from attacking him, Medvedev made the difference on the restart at 5 games everywhere each time. He also capitalized on too many unforced opponent errors and was able to find a very effective first ball in key moments.
