WTA – Beijing > Sabalenka: “Before, I thought that if I didn’t win a match, something bad would happen, that I was going to die”

At a press conference in Beijing, where she will face Madison Keys in the round of 16 on Wednesday, Aryna Sabalenka explained how a mental shift allowed her to win major titles, including three Grand Slam tournaments including the last US Open.

“I’ve improved a lot of things that give me more confidence in my ability to win a match no matter what. That’s probably what gives me that confidence and calm on the court. In the past, I had a lot of difficulties. After you face certain things, you realize it’s just sport. Maybe you’re not going to win this match, so what? No one is going to die, I’m not going to die. I will go to another tournament and do my best in the next one. Before, I thought that if I didn’t win a match, something bad would happen, that I would die or something like that. But these kinds of thoughts are the source of all this pressure, all this frustration and all this madness. Today I just work hard and try to improve every day. Every time I’m on the court, I try to do my best.”revealed the world number 2 in comments reported by Break Point.
