ATP > The big confession from Rafael Nadal, retired for a month: “I no longer have trouble saying it today… There was a period a few years ago when I had difficulty saying control my breathing and therefore play at the highest level I considered taking a complete break from tennis.

A few weeks after ending his career, Rafael Nadal decided to confide in a long letter written for one of his most loyal sponsors, the Korean car manufacturer Kia.

After talking about his heritage by revealing what he would like us to remember about him, and revealing one of the most valuable pieces of advice given by his uncle (Toni), the man with 14 Roland‐Garros titles spoke about his anxiety sometimes difficult to control.

“For most of my career, I have managed to control these emotions. With one exception. A few years ago, I went through a very difficult period mentally. I was used to physical pain, but there were times on the pitch when I found it difficult to control my breathing and couldn’t perform at the highest level. I no longer have a hard time saying it today. After all, we are human beings, not superheroes. The person you see in the center of the field with a trophy is a person. Exhausted, relieved, happy, grateful, but just a person (…) There were months when I considered taking a complete break from tennis to cleanse my mind. Ultimately, I worked every day to improve. I slowly became myself again. What I am most proud of is that I fought hard, but never gave up. »
