During his interview with Match TVin which he notably declared that women should not be paid as much as men in Grand Slams, the former world number 3 spoke of the Sinner affair while remembering his own story. He was beaten in the semi‐finals of Roland‐Garros 2005 by Mariano Puerta, who tested positive in a doping test just after his lost final against Rafael Nadal (who won his first title in Paris).
“Sinner is playing very well, he is doing very well. I like his tactics on court, it's not a question of doping. I saw it in 2019, compared to now, the differences are notable. Jannik began to play differently, his tactics seriously changed. Half of Tennis players now say he wins thanks to doping. Am I supposed to shout that Puerta beat me thanks to doping at Roland Garros in 2005? I was physically dead and he wasn't, but I don't know if the doping helped him win. I'm not going to shout in the press that he's bad, but rather admit my guilt and my mistake as a coach. »
