With the Laver Cup set to liven up the weekend in tennis, Daniil Medvedev made no secret of the fact that the arrival of Yannick Noah as Europe captain was “a good thing”.

A page will soon be turned at the Laver Cup. Indeed, if the Swede Björn Borg and the American John McEnroe were the captains of the “Europe” and “World” selections since the first edition in 2017, the two former glories of the little yellow ball will soon be replaced. Thus, in 2025, it will be the Frenchman Yannick Noah and the American Andre Agassi who will take over, as has been announced for a few months now. Borg and McEnroe will therefore officiate one last time this week at the 2024 edition, which will be held at the Uber Arena in Berlin, this weekend, without Rafael Nadal who had to withdraw. “It’s also a good thing to change coaches from next year. It will be a lot of fun to try something new,” acknowledged Daniil Medvedev about the arrival of the winner of Roland-Garros in 1983.

Noah: “I love team competitions”

As a reminder, when he was appointed, the man who was at the head of the French wheelchair tennis team at the 2024 Paralympic Games was very happy to have been chosen for this role. “I am very honored to have been asked to be the captain of the European Laver Cup team. It’s been a while since I’ve been in the game, since I’ve been making my music, but I’m very happy about this new adventure. I love team competitions, the emotions they create, getting to know the guys, how they are, as people on and off the court, Noah had declared at the time of his appointment, at the end of May. I’m also looking forward to seeing Andre (Agassi) again, 20 years after having him as an opponent. I may have softened a little, but the competitive spirit will live in me forever. I want Team Europe to win! » In the meantime, after two victories for the “World” team in 2022 and 2023, the Europeans will try in a few days to get their hands on the trophy again.
