Samsung is adding two major improvements to its Wallet app for Galaxy phones, including a feature previously exclusive to Apple Wallet.
Tl;dr
- Samsung unveils new software features for its phones.
- Introducing peer-to-peer payment and credit purchase options in Samsung Wallet.
- The features will not launch with the Galaxy S25 series, but soon after.
What's new from Samsung
Alongside the highly anticipated announcement of the Galaxy S25 series and a preview of the imminent Galaxy S25 Edge, Samsung also teased a myriad of new software features for its latest phones. Among these, the revelation of an innovation inspired by the Apple Wallet and which should be deployed later this year. What's new? The integration of peer-to-peer payments and credit purchase options in Samsung Wallet.
Tap to Transfer: a revolutionary feature
The first functionality, called « Tap to Transfer »strongly recalls the « Tap to Cash » from Apple, allowing you to send money to someone simply by bringing your phones together. However, Samsung Wallet goes further than Apple Wallet. Indeed, transactions can be linked to associated accounts and debit cards, and not only through Samsung Pay. Additionally, support for third-party digital wallets is also planned. Transactions will therefore go through Mastercard or Visa rather than through Samsung's own system. A similar feature already exists in South Korea, but the firm now plans to offer it to American users with the best Samsung phones.
Instant Install: simplifying purchases on credit
In addition, Samsung will introduce a new credit purchase option, called « Instant Installment ». Samsung thus simplifies the process allowing users to split their purchases into several installments at checkout. While Mastercard and Visa (or your bank) handle the background of transactions, Samsung takes care of everything you see on your phone's screen. This feature will be available both in-store and online.
-Launch expected after Galaxy S25 series
It is important to note that these two features are not expected to launch at the same time as the Galaxy S25 series, but soon after, probably during the second quarter of this year. If history has taught us anything, it's that older Galaxy models should also have access to these features through software or app updates. If these new features are confirmed, Samsung Wallet could well become a smoother integrated payment service that would leave Apple Wallet far behind.
