Netflix reviews its video game offering

Netflix will review its gaming strategy. The famous streaming service for films and series, which has offered a diversified catalog of mobile video games to its subscribers for several years, announced that it would refine its offering by refocusing on a few key genres. The platform, which closed its Team Blue studio last October, will focus on narrative games based on its own licenses, such as “Stranger Things” or “Squid Game”. It will also offer group games, which reinvent family board game evenings, games for children, which are intended to be a “safe space” without advertisements or in-app purchases. Added to this are major popular titles, such as the famous “Grand Theft Auto” (GTA) franchise, reports Mobile Gamer.

During the presentation of its fourth quarter results, which exceeded expectations, Netflix revealed that “Squid Game: Unleashed” was on track to become its most downloaded game to date. This is its first completely free title, requiring no subscription to the platform to be played.

Greg Peters, co-CEO of Netflix, also admitted that the influence of video games on subscriber loyalty was still limited. He stressed that investments in games remain modest compared to overall content budgets. “We are going to remain disciplined about increasing this investment as we see continued growth and benefits for members,” he said.

This initiative is part of Netflix’s expansion into cloud gaming on televisions and its ambition to become a key player in a sector worth $140 billion, indicates the specialist site.
