Impossible to access the main buildings of Rennes 2 University this Tuesday, January 21, 2025. In the early morning, more than a hundred students paralyzed access to the Villejean campus by setting up barricades of trash cans and construction equipment in front of the main entrances.
Faced with this situation, the university took the decision to cancel all classes this Tuesday. “Eager to reconcile social mobilization and the opening of campuses, while preserving dialogue, the management team is currently doing everything possible to ensure that the university remains an open place for teaching, research and public debate,” writes the presidency in an email addressed to all students.
Lack of resources dedicated to higher education
The blockers are protesting against the lack of resources dedicated to higher education. “We are mobilizing against state budget cuts for higher education,” said a student. “There are real threats in certain sectors, particularly in distance learning.” A demonstration is planned for the end of the morning from the Villejean metro station.
In an already tense context, the senatorial majority of the right and the center adopted a government plan of 630 million savings on higher education and research credits this Monday, January 20.
-At the beginning of December, teachers and administrative staff at Rennes 2 University had already sounded the alarm about the establishment's worrying financial situation. The establishment's deficit amounted to more than 4 million euros over each of the last two financial years.
