TGF – Digital Innovation Trophy: SoniQ Rail Explorer, Vossloh’s asset that tracks defects

Precisely measure and determine the nature of a defect present in a rail in real time, even in the manganese core of a track switch… A challenge that Vossloh’s SoniQ Rail Explorer takes on at the speed of ultrasound.

Driven by a development strategy focused in particular on innovation, operational efficiency and asset management, Vossloh has developed, jointly with the “Fraunhofer IKTS” research and development institute in Dresden, the asset control tool. ultrasonic rails SoniQ Rail Explorer (SRE). Presented in the form of a rod equipped with a wheel, the SRE is a simple to implement measuring equipment, which ensures real-time inspection of rails and track devices, in particular manganese crossing hearts of the latter.
Infallible detection
Featuring nine control heads, the SRE test wheel can capture the vibrations emitted by ultrasound at different angles at the operator’s walking speed. “ This ultrasonic detection makes it possible to locate and precisely determine the orientation and length of a crack in real time. », explains Olivier Desportes, Rail Infrastructure Project Manager. Revealing anomalies present near the surface as well as volume defects in the head, web and base of a rail (standard EN 16729-1), the data is analyzed then displayed on the screen of a tablet. However, if the operator has any doubt about the information displayed, it is possible to carry out a new check to verify a disputed point. “ The SRE stores the collected data. It is therefore possible to compare the two readings and intervene accordingly. », continues Olivier Desportes.
AI optional
To go further in the level of detection, the SRE can be equipped with a camera to provide continuous photographic documentation of the surface of the rails, each image being associated with the corresponding inspection data. Note that the SRE can benefit from the contributions of artificial intelligence and augmented reality, two technologies offered as options. Light equipment (20 kg), therefore easily transportable, the SRE allows operators to carry out one-off missions on metro, tramway, RER lines, etc. avoiding, in fact, the exit of an inspection train dedicated to large linears.
