The Maison de l’Architecture de Franche-Comté is offering Les Démolisseurs, an exhibition by Nicolas Waltefaugle with Yves Ravey, Charlotte Leblanc and Christophe Monterlos on the occasion of the release The Wreckerssecond work in Palissade, collection dedicated to construction site photography. Until February 28, 2025.
Nicolas Waltefaugle loves construction sites, he loves, in the daily life of his job, seeing ideas come to fruition, seeing them take shape day after day, year after year. But the project he gives us to follow here is the opposite, it is disappearance, deconstruction, according to the modest modern term, as if the word demolition had become taboo…
Here, there is almost no heartbreak… The years have passed with the memory of social struggles and the pickaxes of the demolition workers attacking a ” already-ruin “. Oh ! Not yet a romantic ruin, no, a modern ruin, the last vestige of a textile industry which proudly displayed, a guarantee of modernity, in giant letters, the words Tergal and Nylon, icons with an image that has faded today… The cathedral of an industry which unashamedly competed at the entrance to Besançon with the Citadel… which took its revenge!
It is on this page turned for a long time that Nicolas Waltefaugle takes us. We are there witness to his “ poetic chronicle of the disappearance “. No tragedy, no, it is a real plastic work that is given to us to see.
-Architectural frames like a Greek temple door, an almost abstract painting of superimposed shades of gray, a graphic image of intertwined steels, he delights in the creative freedom that this exploration offers him outside the constraints of the architectural commission.
The result is a dense work, a final, respectful tribute from a lover of Architecture to a grandiose ruin, which disappears before our eyes…
