Apple is preparing to revolutionize its iPhone range with a new model of exceptional finesse. This would be the thinnest iPhone ever, and it might just make Samsung jealous.
According to analyzes by Ming-Chi Kuo, relayed by MacRumors, the iPhone 17 Air would only measure 5.5 millimeters thick, thus establishing a new record for the Apple brand and even surpassing the future Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim.
This technical feat represents a reduction of almost 30% compared to the current iPhone 16, which is 7.8 millimeters thick. The previous record was held by the iPhone 6 from 2014, with its 6.9 millimeters. Samsung, for its part, plans to market its Galaxy S25 Slim with a thickness greater than 6 millimeters. The iPhone will therefore be much thinner than the Korean giant’s smartphone.
What do we know about the iPhone 17 Air?
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman confirms this direction in his Power On newsletter, specifying that the iPhone 17 Air will serve as ” testing ground for future technologies », notably those intended for Apple’s future foldable devices. This “Air” name is part of Apple’s tradition, recalling the MacBook Air and the iPad Air, which were also the thinnest of their respective ranges.
To achieve this record finesse, Apple would employ several technical innovations. The smartphone would abandon the physical SIM card port in favor of an exclusive eSIM. It would also integrate new thinner and more energy efficient OLED screen technology.
Technical specifications cited by various sources include a 6.6-inch ProMotion screen with a variable refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, a first for a non-Pro iPhone. The main camera would be a single 48 megapixel sensoraccompanied by a 24 megapixel front camera. The smartphone would carry the A19 chip and 8 GB of RAM to support Apple’s new artificial intelligence features.
This new addition to the iPhone range would replace the iPhone 16 Plus, a model which is struggling to convince consumers. Apple would thus hope to revitalize sales of its intermediate range with an innovative product which could also foreshadow the future of the brand’s smartphones. The launch would be scheduled for fall 2025, well after the presentation of Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Slim. As a reminder, the latter would not be expected on January 22along with the other Galaxy S25s, during the next Unpacked event. It would be released later in the year.
