At the start of 2025, Atari is making its comeback on the portable console market with a device that is unlike any other: the Gamestation Go.
Atari, it will speak to the elders (of which I am one, although I was very young at the time). The brand of yesteryear is no longer what it is, it is now capitalizing on the past.
Modern and retro… but above all retro
The Gamestation Go mixes modern and retro elements. Beyond the traditional directional pad and front buttons found on all current portable consoles, Atari has chosen to integrate three elements which make its signature: a trackball (or Trak-Ball according to the registered name by Atari), a racket and a full keyboard.
For Atari, it is a real need to faithfully revive the brand’s classics.
The trackball, for example, is not just a nostalgic nod: it is essential to rediscover the original sensations of games like Centipede or Missile Command. The racket, for its part, will allow players to rediscover Breakout in good conditions, while the keyboard opens the door to a whole part of Atari’s history that is often forgotten, in particular games from the Intellivision catalog recently acquired by the brand.
On this console, more than 200 games will be available on the Gamestation Go, covering several generations of Atari consoles (2600, 5200, 7800) as well as arcade machines. But Atari is not content with recycling its catalog: the console will also accommodate modern titles and promises regular updates to enrich its library.
All this is associated with modern features like USB-C charging, HDMI output and microSD card support, because on the other hand… there are plenty of better and better designed Chinese retro consoles.
At this stage, many details are missing, such as its power, its technical sheet, but also its OS, which is certainly Android, as well as its price and availability.
