At CES 2025, Qualcomm announced a new addition to its Snapdragon desktop lineup, the Snapdragon high-performance Oryon cores clocked at 3.0 GHz and a 45 TOPS NPU. Obviously, this chip is mainly aimed at the entry-level laptop segment.
It looks like we now have some concrete information on the performance of the latest ARM desktop SoC, thanks to Rolan Quandt, who managed to get Geekbench 6 running on a host system at the show. The Snapdragon
Before we dive into the results, it’s worth noting that the laptops haven’t yet passed the quality control stage, so it’s likely there’s still some performance on the table. Of course, it all depends on the price at which laptops equipped with Snapdragon X will be sold. Qualcomm intends to target the $600 segment, although prices for properly equipped laptops may be higher. We can expect that Qualcomm will likely have the edge in efficiency and battery life, although its 1.7 teraflop Adreno iGPU falls short of the entry Radeon 740M iGPU range that has been on the market for some time now.
For people who prioritize battery life and whose workflows can be handled by an ARM-based system, the Snapdragon X looks pretty impressive, provided iGPU performance isn’t paramount. Of course, this is only true if the upcoming systems are offered at a justified price.
