If you were drinking your coffee on the balcony, this Thursday January 9 early in the morning, in the Pyrenees-Orientales, you may have seen this striking spectacle. For almost a minute, a “luminous ball” crossed the sky of Perpignan and the Roussillon plain. A phenomenon captured almost by chance by residents.
The dog stares at the sky, they see a “ball of light”
Emma and Manuel were in the front row. This Thursday morning, this young couple from Perpignan was treated to a spectacle that was captivating to say the least. HAS 6:49 a.m. very precisely, a “ball of light” tore through the Catalan sky, lasting for many seconds. And it is thanks to their dog Aegon that these people from Perpignan realized this.
“Suddenly, the dog started staring at the sky. We didn’t understand why,” says Manuel. Intrigued, his companion Emma then took a look through the window… “She saw a light and started filming”simply describes the young man, who sent the video to the editorial staff ofNews Perpignan :

In the images, we can clearly see a luminous ball crossing the sky of the Pyrénées-Orientales, barely lit by dawn. A rather rare occurrence, the phenomenon lasted several tens of seconds. Enough to allow these privileged witnesses to immortalize this moment with their phone. “It was very beautiful”they emphasize.
A mystery about the origin of the phenomenon
After the publication of our article, another report reached us, from Morgan, a resident of Toulouges. He also had the time to take video of this phenomenon, the origin of which remains a mystery. In recent years, “balls of fire” have been seen in the sky over Perpignan. But most of the time they were racing cars, as in April 2024 (read opposite).
Visible for just a few seconds in general, the cars are more luminous and impressive than the luminous ball observed this morning in Perpignan. This is generally meteors, small rocks which penetrate the atmosphere at breakneck speed. However, it is not excluded that a small meteor is at the origin of this morning observation.
One thing is certain: these are not Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites, easily recognizable by forming a line of moving points of light. The mystery therefore remains complete on the strange phenomenon observed this Thursday, January 9 in the Pyrénées-Orientales.
