Announced at IFA 2024 in September, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 was successfully, albeit limited, launched in November. The high-end ThinkPad laptop was offered with a single processor, the Intel Core Ultra 7 268V, and a single screen option, a 2.8K 120Hz OLED display that was great, but also expensive and power-hungry. The only option available was the choice between a 1TB or 2TB SSD. We tested the ThinkPad X1 Carbon G13 in December and found it excellent, thanks to the efficiency of Intel’s Lunar Lake processors.
However, the only hardware configuration available clearly isn’t for everyone – the OLED display has PWM, which reduces battery life. Plus, it’s expensive, just like the Ultra 7. Additionally, the X1 Carbon Gen 13 didn’t offer a 4G or 5G option, which is normally a staple of the ThinkPad laptop series. As a result, one of our criticisms of the new ThinkPad X1 Carbon was the lack of configuration options.
Things are about to change: Lenovo is preparing several new options for the X1 Carbon Gen 13, including Ultra 5 processors with 16 GB of RAM and IPS displays, which will bring down the price of the high-end ThinkPad. Although Lenovo hasn’t announced anything yet, these options are already listed on Lenovo’s support site for finding parts:
Exactly when Lenovo will offer these options is not yet clear, but it can be assumed to be in February 2025, when the convertible variant of the X1 Carbon Gen 13, the ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 Gen 10 Aura Edition will also be launched.
