CES was particularly rich in announcements of portable consoles, notably from Lenovo, which made the Legion Go 2 official, as well as three Legion Go S, including one which runs SteamOS. Precisely on this subject, Valve has confirmed its “intention to extend SteamOS compatibility with more devices in the future”.
It’s official, Valve wants to make SteamOS “compatible with other devices”
If you’re not familiar with this universe, you’re probably wondering what SteamOS is. It is an operating system developed by Valve. As its developer explains so well, “it is characterized by a user experience optimized for video games that manages to maintain access to the power and flexibility of a PC, and it allows you to play dozens of thousands of games on Steam.
Today, among portable consoles, only the Steam Deck officially works under this operating system, and soon one of the three Lenovo Legion Go S. However, everything suggests that Valve wants SteamOS to be much more widespread.
“This is the first officially licensed device to ship with our operating system, and we continue to make it compatible with other devices. »
So we can expect SteamOS to be integrated into other hardware in the future. Obviously, portable machines under this operating system would compete with the Steam Deck, but in reality, Valve would still win, to the extent that owners of these consoles would have to buy their games on Steam.
In any case, between all the upcoming portable consoles, as well as the Nintendo Switch 2 and the portable Xbox, this now very competitive market promises to be particularly interesting! We will continue to monitor this closely.
