Microsoft is preparing to radically transform the video gaming experience on Windows laptops, according to statements by Jason Ronald, Vice President of “Next Generation” at the company, during a round table organized by AMD and Lenovo.
Microsoft aims to make Windows gaming even better on portable devices.
The project is ambitious: merging the best of the Xbox and Windows universes to create a gaming experience optimized for portable devices. This major development should see the light of day this year, without waiting for the release of a portable Xbox console, which has been the subject of rumors in recent months. Microsoft ended up spilling the beans and formalizing its arrival in the future.
« We spent twenty years developing a world-class console operating system. It's time to bring these innovations to the Windows ecosystem “, explains Ronald. This transformation aims in particular to simplify the user interface to make it as intuitive as that of a games console.
Microsoft wants to simplify gaming on portable consoles
The stakes are high: currently, Windows struggles to provide a satisfactory experience on portable gaming devices. The compact modes of Xbox apps on Windows are only a superficial solution, without solving the fundamental ergonomic problems.
-Microsoft intends to place the player and their game library at the heart of the experience, minimizing the constraints linked to the traditional Windows interface. The company is working in particular on improving support for controllers and joysticks, initially designed for the keyboard and mouse.
« Our goal is to make Windows a powerful gaming platform on any device », specifies Ronald. “ The Xbox operating system being based on Windows, we can transpose many infrastructures developed for the console to the PC ».
Rather than porting the Xbox OS to Windows, Microsoft seems to favor an integrative approach. The Xbox gaming interface would be superimposed on Windows, hiding traditional elements like desktop, notifications and other system legacy.
The first results of this transformation should be revealed later this year. Microsoft promises gradual evolution, with continued investments to optimize the gaming experience on Windows. A revolution which could well redefine the standards of video games on portable PCs.
