25 years ago, Steve Jobs changed the face of Macs

On January 5, 2000, in the electric atmosphere of Macworld Expo, Steve Jobs took the stage to unveil Mac OS. Few in the room imagined that this operating system would become the cornerstone of the entire Apple ecosystem for a quarter of a century.

« We have some fantastic things to show you this morning, I hope you are as excited as we are. This presentation is going to be memorable “. These were Jobs’ firsts when he addressed the crowd, already jubilant. It was, indeed, memorable!

Mac OS X: the birth of a myth

In 1984, the original Macintosh shook things up with its black and white graphical interface. But fifteen years later, Apple’s classic operating system showed its limits in the face of modern demands : lack of protected memory, limited multitasking, outdated graphics features.

Apple’s acquisition of NeXT then provided a solution that no one saw coming. This company, founded by Steve Jobs after his departure from Apple, owned NeXTStep, a modern operating system with robust Unix foundations.

Aqua, Quartz, Darwin: the perfect cocktail for a revolution

The Aqua interface, presented that day, deeply marked the spirits. The colored buttons at the top of windows, the Dock with its little animation for minimizing applications, the new Finder with its column view: so many elements that persist today in current versions of macOS.

The Mail application made email management completely easier with its address auto-completion function: the software learned from previous exchanges to suggest recipients while typing. It was obviously unheard of at the time.

However, the real revolution was hidden in the very bowels of the system. For the first time ever on Mac, an application crash no longer requires a complete restart. This stability, due to protected memory and preemptive multitasking inherited from Unix, drew loud applause during the demonstration. These technical foundations, grouped under the name Darwin and released as open source, would later form the basis of iOS and all of Apple’s mobile operating systems.

On March 24, 2001, Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah hit the market. The system features Quartz, an innovative graphics engine delivering smooth, hardware-accelerated animations. The transition to Mac OS

Twenty-five years after this historic presentation, the legacy of Mac OS. This system defined the standards of modern computing: stability, security, and intuitive ergonomics. The architectural choices made at the time allowed Apple to build a coherent ecosystem, which led, much later, to the creation of the iPhone and the Apple Vision Pro.

  • In 2000, Apple unveiled a revolutionary system inspired by NeXTStep, laying the foundations for its modern ecosystem.
  • The Aqua interface and innovations such as protected memory have redefined the standards of stability and ergonomics.
  • The legacy of this launch can be seen in the technologies that still form the current Apple ecosystem.
