Every year, new technologies and innovations emerge. Some manage to find their place perfectly, while others quickly fall into oblivion. On this subject, since their invention, telephones continue to convince consumers.

They evolve, offering more and more options and possibilities. So much so that we find it hard to imagine a world without our precious smartphone. Yet this world could arrive faster than we think. And we're not the ones saying it. No, it's Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the man behind the creation of Facebook. But why does he foresee such a disastrous end to our dear phone?

The phone versus the competition

We have moved from cell phones to smartphones. At the time, consumers thought of it as a small computer. They greeted them with a certain distrust, before finally succumbing. This is the nature of innovations. First, they certainly arouse curiosity, but also criticism and distrust.

And, finally, if they prove their usefulness, they succeed in establishing themselves in our daily lives. The telephone is essential for millions of people today. Other inventions, although popular, do not succeed in convincing the greatest number of people.

We are thinking about connected watches. They have existed since 2012 and were originally intended to supplant telephones by integrating their functionalities into a more compact and discreet format. However, twelve years later, connected watches have failed to dethrone smartphones.

Something to replace the phone?

Where watches have failed to replace phones, smart glasses could become the norm. At least that's what Mark Zuckerberg thinks. He believes in a future with a connected watch for every consumer.

So, from the year 2021, he launched, via Meta, the Ray-Ban Stories, the result of a collaboration with the famous eyewear brand. This product combines elegance and innovation: a five-megapixel camera, two speakers and three integrated microphones.

Mark Zuckerberg then declared that “ smart glasses will become the next big computing platform“. Today, we are in 2025. So these new glasses have been around for four years. However, we cannot speak of success or democratization. But the creator of Méta firmly believes in it.

The ambition of Mark Zuckerberg

In a recent post on the X platform (formerly Twitter), Mark Zuckerberg discusses the future of smartphones and the impact of connected glasses.

« You're probably already sitting at your desk in front of your computer, but you still take your phone out of your pocket to do something you could just as easily do on your PC“, he explains.

According to him, a similar scenario will happen with smart glasses. « We will reach a point where your smartphone will stay in your pocket more often than in your hands. This is expected to happen during the 2030s. Even though certain tasks could be performed more efficiently on a phone, users will prefer the comfort of glasses for their daily lives. »

Apple, with its Vision Pro, and Meta are currently leading the smart glasses race. But other tech companies are also working on similar products.
