Apple is developing a smart doorbell and lock system that would use Face ID to unlock the door of homes, Bloomberg reports.
The facial recognition doorbell would connect to a smart deadbolt, which could include existing HomeKit-compatible third-party locks, or pair with a specific lock manufacturer to offer a complete system from day one.
When recognizing the user's face, the doorbell will be connected to a smart key and the door will open automatically. This is a new innovation because until now, Apple has never created a doorbell capable of opening the door without being asked.
In addition to offering facial scanning capabilities and being integrated with smart keys, this Apple-made doorbell will also be integrated with third-party HomeKit keys. This means that users are not required to purchase a smart key made by Apple.
Rumors that Apple's doorbell will connect to third-party smart keys are still unclear. Apple may work with some key manufacturers to introduce this feature or only offer complete packages in a single purchase.
This doorbell is still in its early stages of development and is still far from being produced. It is not yet clear how long this device will be in development, but it is likely that it will only be available by the end of next year.
