Mediatek has not said its last word on the omnipresence of Qualcomm chips on the smartphone market. The manufacturer is in fact unveiling today its Dimensity 8400a mid-range SoC intended for models premium and which is distinguished by its architecture “ All Big Core », its lowered electricity consumption and its artificial intelligence capabilities. On paper, the Dimensity 8400 appears to be an uncompromising and ambitious solution. With it, Mediatek hopes to offer an affordable alternative to high-end products on the market.
Dimensity 8400: the first “ All Big Core » mid-range premium
Engraved in 4 nm by TSMC, the Dimensity 8400 has eight Arm Cortex-A725 cores, a configuration which explains its name “ All Big Core » par Mediatek. These cores are, however, not completely identical: one of them is clocked at a maximum frequency of 3.25 GHz, three run up to 3 GHz and the last four are limited to 2.1 GHz, at most; enough to optimize the available power according to the requested calculation load. These cores are accompanied by an Immortalis Arm Mali-G720 GPU, a priori clocked at 1.3 GHz, coupled with game optimization technologies such as MediaTek Frame Rate Converter (MFRC) and the MediaTek Adaptive Gaming Technology (MAGT) 3.0. The Imagiq 1080 image signal processor uses technology QPD remosaic to capture more light and obtain sharp, detailed images, even in low light. A 5G-A modem that can reach download speeds of up to 5.17 Gbps rounds it off.
The first benchmark results are encouraging – there is unofficial talk of an AnTuTu score exceeding 1.8 million – and suggest a potential that could rival the competition's high-end offerings. Mediatek indicates that its Dimensity 8400 displays a 41% increase in multi-core performance and a 44% reduction in maximum power consumption compared to the Dimensity 8300. Graphics performance is also up (+24%), with here also an efficiency energy increased by 42% compared to the previous generation. This puts the Dimensity 8400 in an interesting position, likely between Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen2 and Snapdragon 8 Gen3 when it comes to raw performance.

Artificial intelligence and additional features
An NPU dedicated to artificial intelligence tasks is also integrated into the SoC. This supports different types of language models (SLM, LLM, LMM), allowing you to accelerate the execution of business applications.Generative AI such as translation, rewriting, contextual responses, recording or even the creation of multimedia content. Mediatek also highlights its DAE (Dimensity Agentic AI Engine), already present in its flagship Dimensity 9400, which enables developers to create AI applications that anticipate user needs and adapt to their preferences.
The Dimensity 8400 also supports WQHD+ displays with refresh rates up to 144Hz, as well as dual-screen support and HDR recording across the full available zoom range. NOS technology (Network Observation System) provides intelligent switching between 5G and Wi-Fi networks, improving energy efficiency and connectivity.
The first devices equipped with this chip, notably the Redmi Turbo 4 expected under $300, should make it possible to better assess its potential.l from the start of 2025. The Dimensity 8400 is in any case well on its way to Redefining value for money in the high-end segment, cost-effectively providing next-level computing power without sacrificing energy efficiency.
