ChatGPT is Google’s biggest threat and the rivalry between the two giants is taking a new turn. OpenAI has completed testing phases and is making its AI-powered search engine available for free. A strong choice which allows the firm supported by Microsoft to position itself as a direct competitor to Google in the online search sector.
ChatGPT Search Takes Off and Threatens Google
OpenAI had promised twelve announcements for the end of the year and Kevin Weil made the news official during a live. “I can no longer imagine ChatGPT without Search”explains the company’s product director. The search engine was until now available to paying subscribers of the famous artificial intelligence tool. From now on, you just need to have an account – even free – on the platform to discover and use ChatGPT Search.

The promising search engine adopts a “classic” operation in appearance. Simply do a search from the search bar to find an answer to your question. The rest is different from Google since ChatGPT does not offer you a selection of sites to visit, but a summary of the results found on the web. The information is sorted, reformulated and the engine reveals its source for each element presented.
This new way of formulating a response to the user’s query is reminiscent of how Perplexity works. This “AI search engine”, today less popular than ChatGPT or Google, stands out through its ability to offer an exhaustive summary of the pages consulted by citing its sources. Faced with Google’s monopoly, the main advantage of these tools is search based on conversational AI.
In addition, ChatGPT is equipped with voice search to allow Internet users to carry out searches by voice and interact in a more natural way.
How to use ChatGPT Search?
A ChatGPT account is enough to use the Search functionality on the web for free, from any platform. Visit chatgpt.com or use the app (desktop, iOS or Android) to search. Web search is usually detected automatically, but you can also activate it manually via the “globe” icon in the input bar.
If you use the Google Chrome browser, you can even install an extension to change your default search engine.
We tested… and everything is not yet perfect
As promising as it is, ChatGPT Search still has gaps in the way it delivers information. He is not always up to date with national news and also has difficulty informing you about the latest articles published on certain sites.
Additionally, the AI search engine can sometimes lack variety in its sources. This is largely explained by the agreements signed by OpenAI with press groups, including the AP and Reuters news agencies and Le Monde in France. As it stands, it should be considered a promising and complementary tool for Google rather than a real replacement.
Another advantage is that it currently offers an advertising-free environment.
