A major change for tech in Europe: all small and medium-sized devices will only be available in USB-C from December 28.
The European Union has imposed the universal charger for the different member states. This directive was transposed into French law in a decree of December 27, 2023 and the obligation will come into force from December 28, but not all devices will be immediately affected.
This law also requires that chargers for electronic devices be sold separately from the devices they charge. For the moment, however, it is smartphones, tablets, laptops, cameras, headphones, portable game consoles, GPS, speakers, keyboards and mice, as well as virtual reality headsets or e-readers that are concerned. For other equipment, the measure will affect them a little later, namely April 26, 2026.
Compliance with this directive will be monitored by the National Frequency Agency (ANFR) from the day of application. The text also provides clear and complete information on the subject and accessible documentation, under penalty of sanctions from the ANFR.
