NVIDIA App – A hell of a lot of -15% performance in games | Games

Hello gamers!!!

So your last gaming session looked more like a Powerpoint slideshow than a smooth game? Don’t panic, you are not alone in this mess. It’s simply the new NVIDIA App doing its thing and turning everyone’s games into slow motion.

Well yes, because NVIDIA has just replaced its faithful GeForce Experience app with a brand new application soberly named NVIDIA App. If the intention was laudable, the results are… let’s say… less glorious than expected. Players report performance drops of up to 15% ! To give you an idea, that’s roughly the performance gap between a standard RTX 4060 and its Ti version. Needless to say, this is far from negligible!

After extensive investigation, it turns out that the Game Filters are the main culprits for this debacle. These filters, even when not actively in use, continue to run in the background silently but surely draining your FPS counter.

The major difference with the old GeForce Experience is that previously, filters only impacted performance when they were actually used. Now, simply enabling them in Settings is enough to create slowdowns, even without actively using them.

According to tests carried out by Tom’s Hardware, here are the performance drops observed:

  • Assassin’s Creed Mirage : up to 12% loss
  • STALKER 2 : around 6% drop
  • Black Myth: Wukong : between 2% and 6% fall
  • Baldur’s Gate 3 : 3-4% less performance
  • Flight Simulator 2024 : 6% loss in 1080p

Rest assured, NVIDIA has officially acknowledged the problem and is actively working on a solution. In an official press release, the company explicitly recommends disabling Game Filters as a temporary solution, pending a definitive fix.

So how to fix this?

Well open NVIDIA App then go to Settings > Features > Overlay Interface. Then deactivate Game Filters et Mode Photo and restart your games.

If the first solution is not enough, you can also opt for complete uninstallation once clean install NVIDIA drivers. Then choose the option “Drivers only” during installation.

Now while we wait for NVIDIA to correct these problems, here are some tips to maximize your FPS:

  1. Update your drivers regularly (but keep the “drivers only” option)
  2. Monitor your temperatures : an overheating graphics card can lose performance
  3. Disable unnecessary overlays (Steam, Discord, etc.)
  4. And optimize your in-game settings depending on your configuration

Happy gaming everyone!
