For its Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung could completely change the S-Pen

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 could well undergo a significant design change

This will come as no surprise to anyone: the market trend is towards finesse. This is particularly the case at Apple, which is preparing to offer an iPhone 17 Air that is much thinner than the iPhone 16 Pro, for example. But the Apple firm is obviously not the only one to follow this global trend: Samsung seems to attach primary importance to it as well, particularly for its foldable models.

An independent S Pen with a built-in battery?

We have already seen this with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold SE which already offered a thinner design compared to what Samsung used to put on the market. However, unfortunately, this finesse comes at a cost: in the case of the Galaxy Z Fold SE, it was the S Pen, the support of which fell by the wayside on the altar of finesse. But this is an abandonment with great impact: if no one expects that the S Pen can be directly integrated into a Galaxy Z Fold, the least that can be done is that it is supported, especially when the device is in tablet mode.

The less expensive S Pen in place in the architecture of the Z Fold 7

To avoid repeating the error for its next range, namely the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung is preparing a drastic design change allowing the support of an S Pen while making no sacrifice on the finesse of the device. So, according to a report from ETNews, Samsung plans to transition from its current use of an under-display electromagnetic resonance (EMR) digitizer to active electrostatic (AES) technology. In both cases, electricity is used to create precise input with the pen, but with EMR this is done via the entire screen. Therefore, the device must have an extra layer, making it thicker. AES, on the other hand, integrates electricity directly into the pen itself. This is the technology that Apple uses in its iPad range, and it requires that the stylus, in Samsung’s case an S Pen, has a battery to generate this electric field.
