Google is preparing to abandon Samsung modems in favor of MediaTek for its future Pixel 10 series. This strategic change would aim to resolve the recurring heating and autonomy problems that marked previous generations.
According to Android AuthorityGoogle would have set its sights on the MediaTek T900 modem, a still unpublished component based on the “M85” generation. This chip should integrate the 5G 3GPP Release 17 specification, promising improved energy efficiency and expanded network compatibility.
This decision marks a significant break with the past. Since the Pixel 6, the first smartphone equipped with the Tensor processor, Google has used Samsung modems which have experienced their share of difficulties. Overheating and reception issues well below the competition have even been identified internally as the main cause of returns of Pixel devices.
Google will finally opt for more efficient modems on its Pixels
Although successive generations (Tensor G2, G3 and G4) made notable improvements, the performance of Google modems still lagged behind the competition. The company had also considered using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X75 before opting for the MediaTek solution, probably for reasons of cost and energy efficiency.
This modem change is part of a broader overhaul of the Pixel 10 architecture. Google also plans to entrust production of the Tensor G5 processor to TSMC, using its 3nm “N3E” manufacturing process “. This decision is explained in particular by the performance problems encountered by Samsung with its 3 nm GAA technology.
This transition to MediaTek represents a first in the history of Pixels. Interestingly, Xiaomi also plans to use the same T900 modem in its future 3nm processor.
While this information comes from generally reliable sources, including Android Authority journalist Kamila Wojciechowska, it’s not impossible that Google could change its plans at the last minute.
