Amusement parks, museums, films, shops… Nintendo extends its kingdom well beyond video games

NARRATIVE– Osaka’s Universal Studios park is hosting attractions this Wednesday dedicated to the Donkey Kong mascot. With the exploitation of its catalog containing Mario, Zelda and other globally popular licenses, Nintendo offers itself new profits… without denying its origins.

Donkey Kong, founder of a nation! On December 11, the famous gorilla from the video game series created by Nintendo will have his own – virtual – country: Donkey Kong Country. An extension of the area called “Super Nintendo World”, nestled since 2021 in the Universal Studios Japan amusement park (in Osaka, western Japan) and which already hosted a virtual reality roller coaster, shops and restaurants dedicated to the Super Mario mascot. Another, identical Donkey Kong Country is being announced soon at Universal Studios in Orlando, United States. Nintendo thus continues to exploit a new source of the torrent of profits which pours into the company’s headquarters in Kyoto: derivative products.
