Vampire Hunters Review (PS5) – A mix of DOOM and Vampire Survivors

Vampire Hunters (VH) may not have many vampires, but it offers scary and addictive FPS gameplay that incorporates the best of the horde bullet paradise of the Survivors genre. Its original DOOMesque aesthetic highlights a rich gothic setting that grounds players in its maps. An awesome modular weapons deck allows for tons of configurations from an impressive cadre of weapons and items. Together, they form the basis of an extremely fun shooter that allows players to decimate a varied and thematic cohort of enemy monsters. This is the newest game in the “Survivor” genre in a long time, it’s a lot of fun, with lots of cool features like auto-fire. Not to mention the fact that the amount of content on offer is pretty ridiculous. The number of weapons alone is staggering, the different upgrades for each weapon, the synergies, effects, characters, builds, artifacts, constellations, and it all adds up to a pretty competent, interesting and not too overwhelming. The characters are actually difficult to unlock, but they change your playstyle significantly, while providing more unlocks to work through, while still retaining some permanent upgrades. The whole meta progression is great and all, but the real winner is the gameplay. We thought it would be too easy, but it’s actually very difficult. The multitude of bosses, while similar from playthrough to playthrough, force you to make quick decisions, prioritize targets, and challenge yourself to move and traverse the map while keeping an eye on the omnipresent flow of enemies.
