Purchasing Xbox games in the Android app: launch pending

Sarah Bond, president of the Xbox branch, made official a few weeks ago the arrival of the Xbox Store on Android mobiles during the month of November. But, as the end of the month approaches, this new feature, which should allow players – in the United States, to begin with – to purchase Xbox games directly from the app to be able to play them on mobile, has not still not seen the light of day. In a new statement, the manager explained on the Bluesky network that this possibility was ready to be deployed, but that its launch was suspended by a decision by the American justice system.

Indeed, the court of justice has not yet rendered its final judgment in the lawsuit which should force Google to open its Play Store to alternative stores. The web giant had managed to obtain a postponement. “Due to a temporary administrative stay recently granted by the courts, we are currently unable to launch this feature as planned,” Sarah Bond said. She adds that her team “is ready to put it online as soon as the court has made a final decision.”

In a response relayed by the site The Verge, Google explains that “Microsoft has always been able to offer its Android users the ability to play and purchase Xbox games directly from its application — it simply chose to not to do it.” According to the company, rushing to implement the Court’s order could compromise Google Play’s ability to provide a secure experience. The firm also criticizes Microsoft and Epic Games, a publisher which had filed a complaint against Google, for their indifference to these security issues. “We remain committed to supporting an ecosystem that works for everyone, not just two of the biggest gaming companies,” says Google, which fails to mention the commission earned on each purchase.
