The discount on smartphones varies a lot from one brand to another, and two types of consumers would benefit from taking an interest in it: those looking for a good used deal and those who want to invest in a new model without losing not its value too quickly.
To compare the discount of major phone brands, we noted the evolution of the prices of models released in 2020, 2021 and 2022 on the second-hand and refurbished market. We focused our attention on two ranges: mobiles between 700 and 1,000 euros, and mobiles between 400 and 500 euros, within the catalogs of Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi and Oppo. In the high-end Apple range, for example, we studied the prices of the iPhone 12, 13 and 14. In the mid-range Samsung, the prices of the Galaxy A51, A52 and A53.

Result: Android mobiles are experiencing a radically different fate from those of Apple, with those in the high-end category declining particularly quickly. The three Android mobiles released in 2022 that we studied are now only worth around a third of their new price, with Samsung's Galaxy S not escaping this erosion. On the other hand, the mid-range is holding up better: 2022 mobiles are still worth around 40% of the new price, with Samsung doing well this time.
The trend is reversed at Apple: mid-range mobiles, like the 2020 and 2022 iPhone SE, are falling even faster than Android mobiles. But the high-end models hold up particularly well: the 2022 iPhone is still worth almost half of its new price at the time today, the 2020 one is almost a third.
What lessons can we learn from this? Consumers looking for the cheapest used mobile phone possible will be primarily interested in Apple's mid-range – the 2020 SE is now only worth around 125 euros and should still benefit from almost two years of software updates. Those looking for a high-end will look at the 2021 vintage of Android smartphones, which has significantly discounted, primarily targeting Samsung, which updates its mobiles longer. The excellent Galaxy S21 and S21+ can be found around 220 euros and 280 euros respectively.

For consumers who absolutely want to buy new mobiles, at the high end of the range, iPhones have a good chance of maintaining a higher rating. And in the mid-range, it is likely that Samsung mobiles will hold up better than those of other Android brands. At this price level, however, the aging iPhone SE of 2022 should absolutely be avoided. As for the low end, let's remember, it's a bad choice when you want to make a mobile last.
