Toyota to develop an electric Celica

Fans of the Japanese brand Toyota are delighted. The firm has just announced that it is currently working on the development of a Celica, a legendary model, in an electric version.

Toyota revives the Celica

Toyota officially confirms the return of the Toyota Celica. This announcement, made during the Japan Rally by Yuki Nakajima, vice-president of the brand, is a decisive step in the history of this legendary model. Symbol of Toyota’s years of glory in the world rally championship, the Celica is reborn in a context where the transition to electric vehicles is redefining the automobile industry.

According to Nakajima, this project represents much more than just a nostalgic reissue. “ The return of the Celica is a celebration of our heritage, but also a look to the future “, he explained. A declaration that raises enormous expectations, particularly regarding the integration of modern technologies while remaining faithful to the sporty spirit of the Celica.

An electric transformation: Gazoo Racing’s bet

The new Celica is expected to become the first fully electric model from the Gazoo Racing (GR) division, marking a significant milestone in Toyota’s electrification strategy. While the GR86 and the GR Supra already embody the sporting excellence of the Japanese manufacturer, this future Celica could redefine the standards in terms of electric performance.

Observers suggest the Celica could draw inspiration from the recently revealed FT-Se GR concept or the Rally Heritage Concept, based on the Toyota GR86. The latter pays homage to the famous Celica GT-Four, which marked the history of rallying with champions like Carlos Sainz and Didier Auriol. The Toyota Celica dominated competitions in the 1990s, winning several titles with its GT-Four version. However, the new version will have to face new challenges.
But above all, bear the weight of history.

Speculation is rife as to its positioning against existing models like the GR Supra or the GR86, but also against rivals like the Nissan Z or electric models from Tesla and Porsche. The first model could be presented in 2025.
