What’s new for the iPhone SE 4?

If iPhones seem not to bring any major new features in recent years, there are several reasons for that. Apple does not enter the game of folding smartphones, is one of the big names and has reached a glass ceiling – like the rest of the competition – but if we can add one more line to the table, I would like to mention the absence of ‘iPhone SE relevant.

The last iPhone SE, the third, dates from 2022, and was more than disappointing. Maintaining a very dated design, the Home button and Touch ID, a single camera and ridiculous autonomy, the only novelty, compared to the previous model, concerned the processor (and the arrival of 5G). This small 4.7-inch screen with huge borders that we know from the iPhone 6 is indeed still sold on the official Apple website, in 2024.

Not enough to jump to the ceiling, but enough to step up to the plate. Two years after the iPhone SE 3, still nothing for those with tight wallets. However, we know that Apple is capable of it. The first iPhone SE is one of the best value for money iPhones in history, and we expect Tim Cook to do the same by using the design with notch and Face ID.

Precisely, according to numerous rumors, everything suggests that an iPhone SE in 2025 is in the works. It should therefore:

• Resume the design of the iPhone 14: an aluminum chassis with flat edges, a 6.1-inch OLED screen with Face ID and the notch.
• A USB-C port: Apple no longer has a choice, it’s the law in the European Union.
• Single rear camera: and yes, you have to make concessions for the price to go down. The iPhone SE 4 would make do with a wide-angle, to the detriment of the classic ultra-wide-angle of standard iPhones.
• The iPhone 16 chip: this SE model, like previous models, would be equipped with the latest chip. The power would therefore be there, but also Apple Intelligence, thanks to the boost from the Neural Engine of the A18 chip of the iPhone 16.
• Very good autonomy: more or less that of the iPhone 14. And if we compare with the current iPhone SE 3, it’s day and night.

Will it be a better buy than the iPhone 16?

In my opinion, yes. Of course the iPhone 16 is better, it offers a screen twice as bright, a second ultra-wide-angle camera, better battery life, the Dynamic Island, a revised design that fits better in the hand…

But these elements are only details if the iPhone SE 4 does indeed cost several hundred euros less. The iPhone 16 sells for €969; imagine an iPhone SE at €650, more than €100 more than the iPhone SE 3. Believe me, this is the model that people will jump on if it looks exactly like an iPhone 14, and if it benefits from the latest chip and Apple Intelligence.

The iPhone SE 4 is scheduled for March or April 2025, approximately in the middle of the iPhone 16 season. A pivotal moment that will delight many fans of this much-loved cheaper range.
