It is one of the most common species in Switzerland and a familiar companion of gardens and forests: the robin was elected bird of the year 2025. The long-tailed tit, the green woodpecker and the nuthatch are are ranked just behind.
More than 12,000 people participated in the election of this little bird with an orange breast and a pearly song, Birdlife Switzerland said on Tuesday.
For the first time, the “bird of the year” was not elected by a committee of experts, but by the population.

A positive image
According to Birdlife, the fact that this little ball of feathers accompanies us all year round contributes to the robin’s positive image. Certainly, in autumn, most robins leave for the Mediterranean basin to take advantage of the warmer climate. But at the same time, other congeners come to Switzerland from more northern regions and spend the winter there.
With its clear, melodious song, often described as a bit melancholy, the robin is one of the first birds to sing in the morning and often one of the last in the evening. It is also one of the rare birds that also sings in autumn and on sunny winter days to defend its winter feeding territory.
The robin begins to nest from the end of March. The nest, made up of moss, leaves and blades of grass, is generally well camouflaged on the ground, for example hidden under a bush or between roots. In general, the robin breeds twice a year.
