Good news for those who are tired of long voice messages that are difficult to listen to in certain situations: the WhatsApp application will soon offer the possibility of transcribing them into text.
This long-awaited new feature will be rolled out globally in the coming weeks, allowing WhatsApp users to read their voice messages instead of listening to them.
New feature
Voice messages are practical, but sometimes it is not possible to listen to them (because you are in a meeting, on a crowded bus, etc.). With this new feature, WhatsApp solves this problem by allowing voice messages to be transcribed into text. The feature will be available to Android users in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian. iPhone users benefit from even broader language support, with languages like French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Turkish and Korean available starting with iOS 16. With iOS 17 and above, new languages are added, including Danish, Finnish, Hebrew, Malay, Norwegian, Dutch, Swedish and Thai.
In practice
To take advantage of it, simply go to the application settings, under Settings > Chats > Transcribe voice messages. This option is disabled by default, but once enabled, it allows you to play voice messages instead of listening to them. Once the option is activated and the language chosen, simply long press on a received voice message, then select the “Transcribe” option to obtain the transcription into text. WhatsApp specifies that this transcription process is done directly on the device, thus guaranteeing the confidentiality of messages. In other words, the company does not have access to voice messages and ensures that neither listening nor reading messages are carried out by its services.
