File Explorer will become even easier to use. The first change concerns window management. Until now, each opening of a folder created a new window, quickly causing chaos on the desktop. Microsoft now introduces a tab system similar to web browsersallowing you to organize several folders in a single window.

Users will nevertheless retain the ability to open a folder in a separate window by holding down the Ctrl key while clicking. This approach provides more flexibility and addresses one of the most common requests from the Windows community.

OneDrive notifications are also improving

The second improvement concerns OneDrive and its backup reminders. Users will now be able to manage these pesky notifications directly from File Explorer. Two options will be offered: a postponement of the reminder for one month or permanent deactivation for a specific file.

This feature puts an end to many users’ annoyance with intrusive backup reminders, especially for those who don’t want to use OneDrive or already have other backup solutions.

To activate these new options, users will need to use the ViVeTool toolrequiring some technical manipulation via the command prompt. Use the CD command to navigate to the ViVeTool folder, then run the command: vivetool /enable /id:47944061. Finally, you will need to restart your computer. After that, you should be able to open new tabbed folders, and disable OneDrive reminders in File Explorer.

Microsoft appears to be gradually testing these features before a wider rollout. These improvements are expected on Windows 11 24H2 and 23H2 versions. They should be officially announced in the coming weeks, before the Microsoft team’s fall break.
