The list of nominees for the Game of the Year category is finally out!

This was the big news not to be missed last Monday, Geoff Keighley finally took the floor to open hostilities concerning his famous ceremony of Game Awards. As a reminder, the latter serves as a major celebration of video games in December, and has been doing so for ten years now. The opportunity to discover a lot of new trailers for games that sometimes haven’t even been announced yet, but also to reward the most notable titles of the year in the style of the Oscars for cinema. This year, however, the selection of games nominated for Game of the Year is a bit of a debate. Indeed, the 6 games concerned are as follows:

One glance is enough to notice the elephant in the room: the presence of Elden Ring : Shadow of the Erdtree in the most prestigious category of The Game Awards. While DLC was until now rewarded in a separate category (as was Phantom Liberty for Cyberpunk 2077 for example), the rules changed this year to be able to integrate the Elden Ring expansion. A choice that is hotly debated, especially since other games from this year like Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth or Helldivers II would have deserved their place.

Nintendo, grand absent du Game of the Year de 2024…

Looking at the list a little closer, there is also a second thing that may shock players. This time it is not a question of presence but of absence, that of any Nintendo game. Indeed, while the Japanese manufacturer and publisher is clearly one of the major players in the industry, none of its games were among the nominees for the 2024 game of the year. Something that hasn’t happened since 2018or 6 years ago all the same.

So be careful, that doesn’t mean that no Nintendo game is present among all the categories awarded during the Game Awards. Indeed, we find for example The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom in categories Best adventure game et Best family game. Moreover, it is in this last category that we find the most Nintendo games since Super Mario Party Jamboree et Princess Peach Showtime are also named there. It is also good to note that Super Mario Party Jamboree is also nominated in the category Best multiplayer gameand above all that Metroid Prime 4 : Beyond is nominated in the category Most anticipated game of 2025even if it is hard to imagine it winning against Grand Theft Auto VI… Some may see this absence of Nintendo in the Game of the Year category as yet another symbol that the Nintendo Switch is running out of steam and that it is It’s time to announce the console that will succeed it.
