The company owning video game studio FromSoftware has confirmed that it has been approached by Japanese giant Sony.
Confirming information from Reuters, Kadokawa, which owns the video game studio FromSoftware behind video game blockbusters like Elden Ring et Dark Soulshas confirmed that it has been approached by Sony in the context of a share buyback.
A “timely” announcement
In a statement sent to the press, Kadokawa Corporation revealed that it had received “first a letter of intent” from Sony, which manufactures the Playstation 5, in order to “acquire shares”. The Japanese company nevertheless tempers the imminence of a takeover, since it explains “that no decision has been taken at the moment.”
She clarified that if the situation changed, she would make announcements “appropriately” at an “appropriate time”.
After Bungie, in January 2022, for $3.6 billion, Sony is preparing to once again pay out a lot of money to continue to satisfy the appetite of Playstation players. On the stock market, Kadokawa Corporation is valued at $2.7 billion. The day after the first rumors, its action rose 30% on the Tokyo stock exchange.
In addition to FromSoftware, Kadokawa also owns the publisher Spike Chunsoft and has a division dedicated to publishing manga and novels, Kadokawa Future Publishing, and another for cinema, Kadokawa Pictures.
It remains to be seen whether this will lead to FromSoftware’s next productions, known for their excellence – Elden Ring was crowned “game of the year” at The Game Awards 2022 – to become Playstation exclusives.
