The first generation of AirTag, released in 2021, quickly won over thanks to its ease of use and its integration with the Apple ecosystem. However, one of the frequently raised weaknesses was their limited scope. The AirTag 2 aims to address this criticism.

According to information relayed by journalist Mark Gurman, the AirTag 2 will use a second-generation ultra-wideband (UWB) chip, similar to that integrated into the latest iPhone and Apple Watch models. This technology promises to improve the signal and extend the location range about 60 meterscompared to around ten for the first AirTags of the name. Yes, we will finally be able to find an object at the other end of our apartment without having to struggle by waving our iPhone in all directions.

Strengthening confidentiality: a priority issue

As soon as they were released, AirTags sparked controversies related to their misuse. Indeed, some individuals have diverted Apple beacons from their original use to spy on or track people, raising legitimate concerns about privacy and security. Far too many people, especially women, have found AirTags hidden in their belongings.

With the AirTag 2, Apple is putting forward measures aimed at reducing these excesses. One of the initiatives concerns the integrated speaker system, which will be made more difficult to deactivate. As a reminder, homemade modifications allowing this component to be removed or neutralized have fueled a black market, facilitating the use of AirTags for malicious purposes. Of course, the small Apple trackers will continue to integrate with the alerts system on iPhone and other Apple devices, which makes it possible to detect an unknown AirTag moving near the user.

A design faithful to the original

Contrary to the expectations of some usersthe design of the AirTag 2 should remain unchanged. We will thus find the emblematic rounded format, compact and practical, but without major ergonomic developments. Users hoping for a flat version suitable for wallets will still have to wait, unless they turn to
third-party solutions
already available on the market.

Expectations are high for this new generation. More than just a gadget, AirTag 2 could redefine the standards for GPS trackers, making them both more efficient and safer. It remains to be seen whether these promises will be fully realized when they are launched, scheduled for spring 2025.
