This very special granny drives telephone canvassers crazy with “endless conversations”

A British telephone operator may have found the solution to deter telephone scams.

He has developed artificial intelligence capable of holding conversations with fraudsters and keeping them online for as long as possible.

O2 presents Daisy, an AI-enhanced grandmother whose only use is to fight phone scams.

Artificial intelligence

This virtual granny's mission is to keep scammers on the phone through endless conversations, which can waste a lot of time, and therefore limit the number of potential victims.

Daisy combines several AI models to best transcribe, analyze and respond to fraudulent calls in real time.

She can thus engage in realistic dialogues and retain her interlocutor for as long as possible, without them ever suspecting that they are in fact communicating with an AI.

What's funny is that this fictional character chats about totally innocuous subjects which obviously have absolutely nothing to do with the subject of the scammers' call. This could be anything from family gatherings to knitting or the house cat. By publicizing this new technology, O2's idea is to help its customers remain vigilant against scams while frustrating all those who exploit the most vulnerable.

The scourge of telephone fraud

Britons are urged to report suspicious calls and messages to 7726, helping to block fraudulent senders and improve protection systems. It is to these reported numbers that Daisy responds today.

According to O2, almost 70% of Britons now say they are worried about being the target of phone fraud. Still according to the operator, every week, around one in five Britons receives a call that is actually an attempted scam.

However, these are increasingly sophisticated and sometimes very difficult to identify. By keeping her interlocutors online for as long as possible (sometimes up to an hour), Daisy limits their capacity to cause harm.
