Google should make its return to the high-end laptop market with a Pixel Laptop in preparation. This should even do without ChromeOS for a more versatile future version of Android.
It was in 2022 that Google decided to abandon the laptop segment with its Chromebook Pixel and Pixelbook ranges launched in 2013. Since then, the firm has decided to prioritize Chromebooks and its ChromeOS system with its partners Asus, Acer, HP and Lenovo.
These more compact, less powerful machines are now focused on productivity with deep integration of Google's AI ecosystem, Gemini.
But it seems that Google is about to resurrect the Pixelbook project under another name, and thus make its return to the laptop market.
A Pixel Laptop on Android?
The site Android Headlines confirms that a team at Google is now working on a new high-end laptop codenamed “Snowy”. This would be a powerful machine compared to the MacBook Pro, Dell XPS or even Microsoft's Surface Laptop.
The details are currently quite thin on the technical sheet of the machine, but the answer to the question of its system seems to already be known. Indeed, we learned overnight that Google plans to merge ChromeOS with Android in order to simplify its software ecosystem between its smartphones, tablets and laptops.
It would therefore be logical that this future Pixel Laptop is a perfect candidate to embed such an OS. The challenge will then be to attract developers to this more powerful system capable of making the most of the technical base of a high-end laptop PC.
We hope to know more in the coming months, even if the project still seems far from being unveiled by Google.
